The CooperBuild plugin lets ChatGPT read and update the CooperBuild workspace you sign in to. You can ask about projects, RFIs, submittals, estimates, procurement and accounting in plain language, and ChatGPT works with the same records and the same permissions you have in the CooperBuild web and mobile apps.
1. Overview
CooperBuild is a construction management platform for general contractors and specialty trades. The plugin connects ChatGPT to a remote MCP (Model Context Protocol) server run by COOPERBUILD, INC. at https://api.cooperbuild.ai/mcp/directory. It works in ChatGPT on the web, in the desktop apps and in the mobile apps, and the same plugin is available in Codex.
2. Requirements
- A CooperBuild account. You sign in with the same email and password you use at app.cooperbuild.ai. If your company does not use CooperBuild yet, book a demo.
- A ChatGPT plan that allows plugins. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, an admin may need to allow CooperBuild before members can connect it.
3. Connect CooperBuild to ChatGPT
From ChatGPT's plugin directory
- In ChatGPT, open the plugin directory and search for CooperBuild.
- Open the CooperBuild listing and click Connect. A CooperBuild sign-in page opens.
- Sign in if asked, check that the page names ChatGPT as the app requesting access, then click Authorize. You are returned to ChatGPT.
By server URL (developer mode)
If your plan or workspace lets you add an MCP server yourself, turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's settings, create a new app named CooperBuild, paste the server URL below, choose OAuth for authentication, and save. Then sign in and authorize as above.
https://api.cooperbuild.ai/mcp/directory
Only authorize a request you started yourself. If a CooperBuild sign-in page appears that you did not expect, click Deny.
4. Use it in a chat
Start a chat, choose CooperBuild from the + menu next to the message box or ask ChatGPT to use CooperBuild, then ask about your work, for example:
- “Show me my active projects in CooperBuild.”
- “Which RFIs on the Riverside project are still open, and who owns them?”
- “Summarize the submittals waiting on architect review.”
- “What is the budget versus actual cost on the Main Street job?”
- “Create a task to confirm the rebar delivery for Friday.”
5. What the plugin can do
- Projects — search projects, review tasks and schedules, create and update tasks, and check site weather and daily progress reports.
- Drawings and documents — search drawings and specifications, compare sheet revisions, and manage RFIs and submittals with their review status and revision history.
- Preconstruction — browse and edit estimates and line items, run quantity takeoffs from plan sets, and prepare proposals.
- Procurement — create resource requests, request and compare vendor quotes, and track shipments and inventory.
- Accounting — view project finances, budgets and reports; process vendor invoices, payment applications and client billing.
- People and time — timesheets, payroll, recruiting and subcontractor compliance documents.
- CRM and communications— look up contacts and companies, see a person's activity timeline and open action items, and send email and SMS from your connected accounts.
- AI phone calls and meetings — ask a Cooper AI agent to call someone, leave a voicemail or join a meeting for you. The agent introduces itself as an AI assistant calling on your behalf, and meeting invitations say when an AI agent will attend.
- Your Cooper agents — hand a request to one of the AI agents your company has set up in CooperBuild, by name, and get its answer back. ChatGPT shows you the request and the agent first, and the agent starts only after you confirm.
- Memory — CooperBuild can remember durable facts and preferences about you, such as your role and how you like emails written, so it does not have to ask again. You can view, edit and delete them in CooperBuild under Settings → Cooper AI Profile.
Every tool is labelled either as read-only or as one that makes changes, so ChatGPT can tell which requests only look at data and which create, update or send something.
6. Sign-in and permissions
- OAuth with PKCE.ChatGPT never sees your CooperBuild password. You sign in on CooperBuild's own page and approve access there.
- Your role applies. The plugin acts as you. It can only see and change what your CooperBuild role allows, and a request outside your permissions is refused with a “permission denied” message.
- Your company's workspace. Requests run in the CooperBuild workspace you signed in to.
- Sign-ins expire. Access tokens last one hour and renew automatically for up to 30 days. After that, or after you disconnect, ChatGPT asks you to sign in again.
7. Your data
When you ask ChatGPT a question, the plugin returns the CooperBuild records needed to answer it, such as project details, documents, contacts or financial figures. Those results become part of your ChatGPT conversation and are handled by OpenAI under its own terms and privacy policy.
CooperBuild stores and processes your workspace data as described in our Privacy Policy, including how AI models use your data. Use of the plugin is covered by our Terms of Service.
Some requests are carried out inside CooperBuild by its own AI features: reading an uploaded payroll report, résumé, receipt or invoice, running one of your Cooper agents, or placing an AI phone call. For those, CooperBuild sends the content needed to the AI providers named in the Privacy Policy (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, and Amazon Textract, plus speech providers for calls and meetings).
8. Disconnect
- In ChatGPT's settings, find CooperBuild among your connected plugins and disconnect it. ChatGPT stops using CooperBuild in your chats.
- If you created a client ID and secret for an AI app on the Connect AI page in CooperBuild, revoke them there as well. Revoked credentials stop working immediately.
- To have us end every active plugin and connector sign-in for your account, email hello@cooperbuild.ai.
9. Troubleshooting
The sign-in page closes or never opens
Allow pop-ups for ChatGPT and for cooperbuild.ai, then try again. In Safari, turn off “Prevent cross-site tracking” while you connect.
ChatGPT says it cannot reach the server
If you added CooperBuild by URL, check it is exactly https://api.cooperbuild.ai/mcp/directory, including /mcp/directory at the end. Delete the app and add it again if you changed it.
It worked before, but now asks me to sign in
Sign-ins renew for up to 30 days, and revoked credentials stop working straight away. Disconnect CooperBuild in ChatGPT and connect it again.
A request fails with “permission denied”
The plugin follows the same role checks as CooperBuild itself. Ask a workspace admin for access to that part of CooperBuild.
ChatGPT does not use CooperBuild
Choose CooperBuild from the +menu next to the message box, or name it in your request, for example “In CooperBuild, show me my open RFIs.”
